[Build Your Business Online] TITLE

Build Your Business Online has posted a new item, 'Berlin Meet-up Details – April 25'

I just arrived in Berlin, Germany a few hours ago. I promised to have a meet-up while we’re in town, so here are the details:

Date: Thursday, April 25, 2013

Time: 7:00 pm (19:00)

Location: Tiergarten (exact location)

Please come hang out in the park with us, meet other locals, talk about personal growth, and teach Rachelle and me a thing or two about Berlin. This is our first-ever trip to Germany.

When I was a kid and my Mom would take my siblings and me to the local shopping mall, she’d bribe us with an offer of an ice cream cone from Baskin-Robbins if we’d behave ourselves. So if we acted like monkeys in the stores, we wouldn’t get any ice cream on the way back to the car. Most of the time, sometimes with a large amount of begging and pleading, we were able to get our cones.

Many years later I began learning about the long-term consequences of eating junk food — on the body and particularly the brain. In my early 20s, I decided to upgrade my diet. I went vegetarian first, then 100% vegan several years later. With each change I felt less mentally foggy. I could concentrate more easily and think more clearly. It’s been about 20 years since I’ve eaten animal flesh and more than 16 years since I’ve had any animal products at all, including ice cream. I don’t miss any of it.

As it so happens, John Robbins (son of Irv Robbins, one of Baskin-Robbins’ co-founders) decided to walk away from his father’s ice cream empire. Instead of devoting his life to selling junk food, he became a spokesman for nutritious food, healthy people, and a sustainable planet. He opted for a greater purpose in life.

John Robbins is the bestselling author of some of my favorite books on health and sustainability, including Diet for a New America, which was one of the first books I read on how our dietary choices impact our bodies and the planet as a whole.

I’ve never met John, but I had the chance to hang out with his son Ocean for several days last year when we were at a retreat together. Ocean and I became fast friends and have stayed in touch. Ocean and his Dad work closely together, and the two of them are passionate about creating a healthier and more sustainable planet, a cause I support. I told Ocean I wanted to help spread the word about any cool projects that might be of interest to my readers. Here’s one of them…

Build Your Business Online has posted a new item, 'The Perfect Business Idea is Hooking into Existing Customer Streams'

Perfect Business Idea?Ever heard of the Blue Ocean Strategi? It’s a business strategy that’s described in a book by the same name from 2005 and it suggests that

an organization should create new demand in an uncontested market space, or a “Blue Ocean”, rather than compete head-to-head with other suppliers in an existing industry

When it came out it was the new black in business and it currently has a four star rating on Amazon. But is this the “Perfect Business Idea/Strategy”? I think not… read on…

(for the record, I agree with this guy's review)

So why am I bringing this up?

One of the most frequent questions I get is how to "get that perfect idea that no one has ever thought of.”

Now if you've read my free ebook you probably know my opinion on "getting perfect ideas.”

They don't exist! In a rather old video I ranted about good ideas vs. bad ideas because in my world there are only ideas.

Too many people get so fixated on getting the right idea for a product or service that they quit (or at least stall forever) before they've even started. Guess what: Building a business or product takes time and effort and if you already quite before even starting, my prediction is that you won't ever achieve success with your own business.

If you're a solopreneur or just starting out in your own venture, the Blue Ocean Strategy sucks BIG TIME.

You don't want to "create new demand”!

Do you know how hard it is change people's habits? This is essentially what's in the "create new demand”

This would require a marketing effort and money to do so that no small business owner can do alone. It would require a team of people and money to spend on SuperBowl scaled advertising.

So while it may sound like the method of an evil genius to just "create new demand” you don't want to create a new market for yourself. No instead what you want to do is: copy what's working and improve it.

You want to position yourself in customer streams where money is already being spent, not trying to persuade people to spend money on something that they didn't spend money on before.

Perfect Business Idea?When you build your product or service you want to take some existing idea that is already making money and see if you can improve it slightly. Perhaps bring it to a new market segment, perhaps you can create a more professional online presence or perhaps you can simply negotiate a better deal with the suppliers because your best friend is sleeping with their CEO. Who knows…

Dan and Ian over at the Lifestyle Business Podcast also dedicated a whole podcast to their take on this method that they call Rip, Pivot and Jam. They are crazy guys and I strongly urge you to listen to their awesome podcast.

Why having more than 300 competitors is a good thing

Does he have the perfect business idea/model?Someone who's really good at this method is in fact a Danish internet entrepreneur (and kick ass guy) called Martin Thorborg. Most of my Danish readers will know him but if you don't live in Denmark chances are that you haven't heard about him before.

Back in the early Internet days he started a site called Jubii, it was basically a local clone of Yahoo that was dominating the search/portal market at the time (Jubii is the Danish word for Yahoo ;) ). A perfect example of taking something that's working in one market and bringing it to a new one.

Martin has a Danish podcast and in one of the episodes he argues why competitors are a good thing (in Danish).

When he helped start the company SPAMFighter they had more than 300 competitors! How's that for a crowded market? Heck they even had Microsoft as a competitor!

What they did do was to

  1. target the non-techies in the market and
  2. localized/translating the application to a crazy number of languages bringing it to markets that normally would have trouble with English only applications.

Hooking into customer streams

So what can you do to create a business that hooks into an existing customer stream?

1. Start with the market not the product

Instead of focusing on developing a product, you should start out with selecting your existing market. You could optionally start out with selecting the product you want to "clone” and then focusing on the existing market that product has and how you can tune it.

2. Design the product to the market

I know a lot of entrepreneurs are pushing the message that you should develop something "scratching your own itch“. In my book that's a lousy way to do business. You are not the one who's gonna buy your own products are you? Are you happy designing your business with only one guaranteed customer?

Don't get me wrong by the way, I hold a high degree of respect for 37Signals (the guys I linked to above). So much that I at one point had a company called 41Concepts (with the name partly being a tribute to them). But I don't recommend that you follow their advice in this situation.

Ask your potential market what they want in a product, try to see what kind of questions your potential market asks and build all of that into a product!

3. Identify ambassadors and passionate leaders

Because there is an existing market, there are most likely people discussing products and services in that market. You need to identify them and reach out once you have a minimum viable product and have them test it.

They can both help you sell the product by reviewing it online but they can also give you valuable feedback on the actual product that you can use to improve it.

So unless you're in a market like toilet paper that no one really cares about… no wait…. I stand corrected, even in the toilet paper market someone is testing and reviewing ;) .

4. Launch your product where your customers are

If your potential customers hang out in forums, facebook groups, physical events or what have you, doesn't really matter. The only thing that matters is that you are where they are.

So instead of mindlessly buying AdWords or similar standard marketing strategy, spend a little time getting to know the whereabouts of your customers. If you can establish yourself as a leader in the space of your customer chances are that you have a very viable business. Even with no original idea, a ton of competitors and no money to spend on marketing.

Kicking ass is underrated

So summing up here…

Taking a product or market that hasn't evolved much in a couple of years and bringing "kicking ass” to the table is really a fantastic business idea.

You take something that is already making money and has proved it's worth and then spend your energy on differentiating yourself from competitors that might have had a cash cow for the last couple of years and have really been lulled into comfort by their current market position.

Build Your Business Online has posted a new item, 'Let the Old World Collapse'

I frequently receive emails from people contemplating major career and lifestyle transitions. Their stories have many variations, but they typically have these elements in common:

  • dissatisfaction with their current work or lifestyle (or lack of meaningful work)
  • feeling that they’re on the wrong path (possibly for years)
  • feeling of being on a treadmill that goes nowhere
  • feeling of stress linked to their situation (sometimes dreading going to work)
  • feeling that something needs to change and that the clock is ticking
  • feeling of pressure to get something going
  • desire to contribute in a way that that feels inspired, meaningful, and fulfilling
  • desire to make a decent income that at least covers their expenses

Much of the time there’s also a pattern of stuckness that includes one or more of these elements:

  • feeling of financial pressure (especially linked to bills or debts)
  • feeling of obligation to financially support others like a family, spouse, finacĂ©(e), parent, sibling, or roommate
  • worries that if they do what they love, it won’t pay much, or it will take a long time to pay off financially
  • worries that they don’t have the skills to earn a better income elsewhere
  • feeling of low or inconsistent energy
  • feeling unmotivated
  • feeling down and despondent
  • feeling frustrated

Notice that the items on both lists are feelings.

Interestingly, when such a person finally does get unstuck and starts moving on a new career path, they frequently report the following:

  • feeling relieved
  • feeling of freedom
  • feeling smarter, like they made the right decision
  • feeling hopeful about the future and expecting further improvement
  • feeling done with the old path and having no more loyalty to it
  • feeling of resignation and surrender to the challenges ahead
  • feelings of strength and courage
  • feeling of finally being on a sensible path
  • feelings of excitement and optimism
  • feeling of high energy and alertness
  • feeling more attractive (with people and opportunities)
  • heightened sense of awareness (feeling more awake, alive, and conscious)
  • increased feelings of control over circumstances
  • cascading flood of new desires in other areas (improved relationships, becoming healthier, etc)
  • wondering why the transition seemed so scary in the first place (and sometimes wishing it happened much sooner)

Now here’s the rub. Sometimes the fears and worries the person originally had about leaving their old lifestyle actually do come to pass. They may have less money for a while. Some bills may go unpaid. Their fiancĂ©e might freak out and leave. They may lose their house.

Sometimes those experiences can be avoided, but other times they happen pretty much as expected.

Recovery

Once the fear, worry, frustration and other negative feelings are replaced with more positive, forward-moving feelings like courage, relief, surrender, and freedom, an interesting shift happens. The shift is that the person stops resisting these events from happening and finally accepts that they may come to pass. Furthermore they finally realize that if the worst happens, they’ll still be okay.

That’s really the key to navigating these kinds of transitions. When you can resign yourself to accepting that your various fears and worries may indeed come to pass, when you no longer hold them over your head as something that must be avoided, you can make a smarter choice that frees you from the stuckness.

You may feel that your possessions and relationships are so important that you have to cling to them for dear life. But of course that isn’t true. The other side isn’t hell and death. It’s recovery.

If you’ve built your possessions and relationships upon an unstable foundation, then there’s a very good chance they’ll crumble when you stop straining to keep them in place. Let them collapse anyway. It’s okay to do that.

Some people view this situation as a disaster. It’s not. It’s an opportunity. Once your old world collapses, you can recover and rebuild. Now you have the chance to start fresh and do things more intelligently.

The Worst Case Probably Isn’t That Bad

I built my first business on an unstable structure. I kept it going for years and finally threw in the towel on the old model. Predictably, the business collapsed. I had to break my office lease and sell off all the furniture and equipment. I got kicked out of my apartment because I couldn’t pay the rent. I couldn’t pay my bills or debt. I declared bankruptcy.

For years there was the worry that this might happen if I didn’t keep straining to keep the business going. And my worries were right. Pretty much all the stuff I worried would happen did happen.

But you know what? Going through that experience wasn’t really so bad. It was interesting. Some of it was actually pretty easy. Throughout most of it, I felt increasing relief and a renewed sense of freedom and possibility. All the old baggage was gone. No more office. Fewer possessions. Fewer obligations. No more debt.

Most of all, no more straining. Life became a lot easier.

I got a cheaper apartment and downsized tremendously. I became debt-free. I learned to live within my means. Those were actually good things. Where was all the hell and death? Those were just feelings. The reality wasn’t actually painful.

After that, I kept going with the same business but radically changed the business model. I avoided the earlier mistakes, and that business recovered just fine and worked great. It was profitable every year thereafter. But I had to go through the collapse first to reach that point.

Stop Straining

Years later the same pattern played out in my marriage. I did my best to maintain an unsustainable path for as long as I could. But when the strain finally became too great, I threw in the towel and let it collapse. I recovered. My ex-wife recovered. We don’t have the same relationship we once did, but we’re still friends and not enemies. The worst case outcome wasn’t so terrible to live through.

By allowing my old lifestyle to collapse, I cleared the slate to build a new one.

And again, the worst part was resisting the collapse. Actually going through it was challenging at times, but it was definitely doable, and there was this increasing feeling of relief over time.

I’ve gone through this same collapse pattern on other occasions too, enough times to know that there will probably be many more iterations of this in my future. I don’t see it as a bad thing to be avoided. I see it as a natural part of living, learning, and growing. From time to time, these experiences are necessary to clear out the stuckness and start fresh.

If you’ve been feeling out of sync with your current work or lifestyle, and you’re currently straining to prop it up and keep it going, consider letting go. Try allowing the old world to collapse. Many or all of your fears and worries might actually come to pass, but that’s okay. You’ll cope with them, one step at a time. Other people have lived through something similar and felt better on the other side. You will too.

You can always make more money and repurchase possessions that you really liked. Better yet, you can replace those items with things you like even more. Or you may choose to live more lightly and not replace them at all.

You can always attract and form new relationships. There are lots of fascinating people in the world, and without so much straining, you’ll become more attractive. You may be surprised at just how easy it is to make new friends and relationship partners when you’re no longer straining. Even if you’re really attached to one or more relationships right now, and even if you may lose those relationships if you stop straining, you’ll find love again. And you’ll be happier in the new relationships than the old ones.

You don’t have to keep the old world alive. If it keeps falling apart on you, let it collapse. Experiencing the collapse isn’t as bad as fearing the collapse.
