[Build Your Business Online] TITLE

Build Your Business Online has posted a new item, 'Add the Best; Drop the Worst'

When you realize that you have many bad or mediocre habits that are holding you back in life, you may start to feel overwhelmed. Where should you begin? Should you upgrade your health habits? Attempt a 30-day supertrial? Commit to working an hour a day on your online business?

Here’s a simple heuristic that will help you identify which habits to change first:

Add the best. Drop the worst.

Let’s start with the first part.

Can you identify some of the absolute best habits you could add to your life, such that if you maintained these habits every day for the next 20 years, it would make a huge difference in your results?

Go ahead and brainstorm a few ideas. Jot them down. You don’t need a lot — a small handful of ideas is fine.

Now is there a certain idea that pops out at you? It may be on your short list, or you may come up with a new idea.

This is probably an idea that you fear, at least a little, but it will also be the idea that excites you the most when you think about the long-term results. If you added this one habit to your life and truly mastered it, it would trump all the others. If you could only install one new permanent habit, this would be it.

What is it?

And don’t give me that “I don’t know” crap. If you don’t know, then put your brain to the task and figure it out.

Of course you can’t really know which single habit is the absolute best. You don’t know what the future will bring, so you can’t know which habit will be best suited to your future growth and results. But surely you can make an educated guess.

And if you can’t even guess, then I’ll tell you what to use. Start drinking one quart of fresh juice every day. I like carrot-celery-cucumber-apple-kale-parsley-ginger-lime. It has to be fresh — none of that store-bought stuff. Drink it on an empty stomach.

Seriously, if your mind is too foggy to think clearly about this, it’s a safe bet your diet sucks (processed foods really cloud up the brain), so I’d start with an upgrade there if I were you.

Your Worst Habit

Next, use a similar process to identify your single worst habit.

What is that one nasty habit, that if you could somehow drop it from your life permanently, it would make a huge difference in your results over the next 20 years?

What one problem behavior keeps biting you again and again?

Is drinking soda making you fat, foggy, and anxious? Does checking email more than once a day kill your productivity? Are you wasting way too much time watching TV?

What habit seems to be slowing you down more than any other? Which one would you be overjoyed to finally be rid of?

A decent choice here is to pick the worst food (or class of foods) that you know has been hurting your ability to enjoy high energy, good mental focus, and deep concentration.

Choose Crisp and Clear Habits

Don’t make these habits complicated or vague. Choose simple habits with clear and crisp boundaries.

So don’t pick procrastinating as your bad habit and being more productive as your good habit… or overeating as the bad and eating healthier as the good. What do those things even mean? How do you measure success vs. failure? These choices are meaningless. If you picked something like that, you’re being stupid, so stop it!

Don’t be stupid here. Be down to earth and specific. When you choose a specific habit, there will be a clear and sharp dividing line between success and failure. Either you did the action or you didn’t. There’s no gray area in the middle.

Choose a bad habit like consuming coffee and a good habit like getting up at 5am every morning. These are clear, specific, and easy to measure. Either you drank some coffee in a day, or you had none. Either you’re up and on your feet at 5:00 am, or you aren’t.

If you had a sip of coffee or a chocolate-covered espresso bean, you failed. If you had no coffee whatsoever in a day, you succeeded. That’s crisp and clear.

If you hit the snooze and got up at 5:10am, you failed. If you’re vertical before the clock hits 5:01 am, you succeeded. No room for doubt.

That fuzzy gray zone between success and failure is the death of many would-be habit changes. Don’t waste your time in that space. That is the zone of pretenders and wannabes.

If it makes sense to do so, choose related habits, such that your worst habit to drop and your best habit to add are two sides of the same coin. For instance, stop drinking soda, and drink a quart of green juice every day instead.  This isn’t essential, but it does make the process of change a little easier if you can pair up habits like this.

Begin a 3o-Day Trial

Now that you have your two habits, and you’ve vetted them for clarity and crispness (and lack of stupidity), you’re ready to get started. Begin by kicking off a 30-day trial of both habits simultaneously.

Technically you’re doing two overlapping trials together. One trial is to drop your worst habit, and the other is to add your best habit.

Use the process described in the article Habit Change Is Like Chess to set yourself up for success. Do what it takes to handle the early game, middle game, and endgame as you transition from the old behaviors to the new ones.

Don’t look back. Once you’ve locked in these habits, repeat the process. Seek out your new worst habit and your new potential best habit. Then recondition those as a pair too.

You may have been lucky, finding yourself blessed with an assortment of positive habits that have served you well throughout your life, but most likely you still have a collection of time-wasting, energy-draining, soul-sucking behaviors that you’d be delighted to dump. No matter what your starting point is, you can always continue to apply the “add the best; drop the worst” heuristic. Even good habits can be replaced by great ones.

[Build Your Business Online] TITLE

Build Your Business Online has posted a new item, 'The Lifestyle Business Rockstar! – My First Book is Finally Here'

The Lifestyle Business RockstarIt’s been awful quite on this blog for a couple of weeks and for this I apologize. Truth is told I’ve been quite busy with getting the last couple of details about my book sorted out.

Originally I had the goal to release the book in late 2012 (or early 2013) something I didn’t quite manage.

The actual manuscript was pretty much done late 2012 but then the whole editor phase began. Because let’s face it, English is not my first language (as you’ve probably noticed if you’re a regular reader :) ) so I needed someone to step in and help get the voice of the book just right.

So these past months have been a tour the force in both book editing but also the whole process of doing the layout of the book and getting the final illustrations done.

If you’re on my newsletter list (you can join by filling in your name and email in the box to the right) you’ve already heard about the book as I told you guys a little early on. Since I’m giving away 1000 copies of the book for free (you just have to pay for shipping and handling) I wanted my regular readers on my newsletter list to get the offer first.

At the time of writing I still have free copies to give out, but notice that since this blog post will probably be online for a long time, I cannot guarantee that I’m still giving books out when you read this.

I have chosen to self publish the book, simply because it’s so damn easy to do so. However I also wanted a product that I was proud of which is why I hired a professional editor (and author) to help me get it absolutely perfect. I also hired an illustrator and got my book a professionally layout.

In today’s book market most publishers still require the author to do most of the marketing anyway and a first time author as myself would probably not have gotten much attention once the ink on the contract was dry.

So my process has been

  • Writing the raw manuscript
  • Getting an editor on board
  • Starting up the illustrator
  • Doing several passes of the book with the editor
  • Getting drafts of the illustrations and providing feedback
  • Final approval of the manuscript
  • Getting the finalized illustrations in high resolution
  • External proofreading
  • Starting layout and find that we’re missing a few illustrations
  • Getting the final illustrations and finalizing the layout
  • Ordering first physical printed proofing copy
  • Finding a few gotchas in the printed book, more editing
  • New layout because the illustrations didn’t fit just right in the existing layout
  • Finally a book that I’m happy with, approve the book
  • Book live on Amazon.com 5 minutes later, damn that was quick!
  • Getting the book formatted for Kindle (the original manuscript had a few glitches on the Kindle platform)
  • Kindle version online a few weeks later

As you can see, there’s a lot of back and forward and stuff like this just takes time.

But I wanted to share a few resources with you if you’re planning on writing and publishing your own book.

Self-publishing platform

When it comes to self-publishing I first heard about it with the arrival of lulu.com and I think that they really showed people how easy it can be to do your own book out of the established system. However I ended up using Amazon.com’s self-publishing platform CreateSpace.com.

They have excellent integration with Amazon’s platform and they are also super easy to work with. While it’s free to use, they do sell additional services if you want help with editing or illustrations (and cover and such).

I didn’t end up paying for any of these services beside the expanded distribution that costs a one time fee of just $25 (read more about it here)

Editor

I cannot stress the importance of a good editor and to be honest I don’t think I would have had a book if it wasn’t for my editor L.A. O’Neil. If you’re a new author I cannot stress the fact enough to get someone with a book track record in your corner :) .

She even did the entire layout of the book and helped me find someone who could do a professional cover.

And speaking of which, let’s look at the kick ass illustrations in the book.

Illustrations

Because most of the cover art and all of the illustrations in the book are done by ûber cool German artist Mars Dorian.

I met him in the spring of 2012 in Berlin and instantly knew that if my book ended up having the word “Rock Star” in the title, he would be the guy who should do all the illustrations.

So check out his stuff, this guy is going places.

A long process

So because this was the first time for me, I’ve clearly had a hard time planning the entire process. But my main strength has never been detailed planning ;) but at least I now have a clear path to how I should go about my next book.

“What Rasmus, will there be a next book?”

Yes I’m pretty sure there will, however now I need to start working on the hard part with the first one: Marketing.

But I will probably update you about how that’s going in a future post.

Get the Book

If you’re among the first 1000 people you can get it for free here:
http://LifestyleBusinessRockstar.com

If not (or if you just want it quicker) you can order it directly from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk.

It’s now also available on Kindle.

If you’ve ever written a book (published or not) or a just secretly dreaming about writing one, let me know in the comments below. Would love to hear about what challenges you’ve met and how you overcame them :)

Build Your Business Online has posted a new item, 'Habits and the Long View'

If you aren’t satisfied with your life today, yet you continue the same habits that got you here, you’ll still be dissatisfied next year, possibly even more so.

Many habits may feel quite satisfying in the moment, but they have no long-term positive impact. They are temporary pleasures or escapes but nothing more. These habits tend to self-perpetuate automatically, but as you become more conscious and rational, you’ll discover the importance of replacing these short-sighted habits with better ones.

In my early 20s I could spend as much as 18 hours straight playing video games, a habit that I enjoyed but which produced no significant long-term impact (other than becoming a more skillful gamer). By replacing that habit with reading and writing, I’ve played hundreds fewer games but read more than a thousand extra books and wrote more than a thousand articles and a book. I feel good about that trade.

Think carefully about the long-term impact of your current habits. Your habits will likely take you down a path that’s either increasingly satisfying or increasingly disappointing.

A small course correction today can make a huge difference over the next 10 or 20 years. That may seem like a long time to wait, but those years are going to pass anyway, and someday you’ll be looking back to your self of today, perhaps with appreciation for your wisdom… or with disgust for your short-sightedness.

I often look back at the decisions I made in my 20s and feel glad that I put so much thought into how those decisions would affect myself and others down the road. I hope my 60-something self is equally appreciative of the careful thought I put into making decisions while I’m in my 40s.

Imagine your future self 20 years out looking back at the habits you have today, having experienced two more decades of accumulated impact from those habits. What would s/he appreciate about your habits? What would s/he beg and plead with you to change?

Build Your Business Online has posted a new item, 'Spring Forest Healingfest – Free Online Event'

Learning Strategies is hosting another free online streaming event this week. It’s called Spring Forest Healingfest and features Qigong expert Chunyi Lin.

Today’s session is about Qi energy, and it’s already available for you to listen to it now. You can access the Healingfest via your web browser or smart phone.

All 6 days of the Healingfest are free, with new sessions posted each day. Each session can be streamed for free for about 24 hours. After that, Learning Strategies will be selling the recordings.

A typical Healingfest session is about 30 minutes, so it’s an easy listen… fits nicely into a lunch break.

I did some Qigong sessions with Chunyi in person a while back. He has an especially soothing voice that can put you in a very relaxed state, so don’t try to listen while you’re driving!

Get free access to the Healingfest here: Spring Forest Healingfest

If you’re curious about why I keep promoting these Mindfests on behalf of Learning Strategies, it’s because my readers keep signing up for them in large numbers. People really like that the Mindfests are free, and I receive many appreciative emails about them each time. Learning Strategies has also been in business for 30+ years, so they know how to create high quality content.

Learning Strategies loves you guys too. For their last Ultimate You Mindfest this year, students from StevePavlina.com purchased more products from them after the Mindfest than from any other source. So it makes good business sense for them to keep offering these. The Mindfests are totally free — no hidden catch — but many people appreciate the material enough to want to own a copy afterwards.

By the way… if you want to get updates on the progress of my upcoming Subjective Reality audio program and especially if you’d like to be notified when it’s available, be sure to subscribe to my free newsletter. I include progress updates in the newsletter but generally not on the blog.
